During the pandemic, Uzbekistan helped 380 thousand of its citizens to return home from Russia.

This was announced by the secretary of the country’s embassy in the Russian Federation Zakir Zaitov.

“During the pandemic, the embassy and consulates assisted in the departure of approximately 380 thousand citizens of Uzbekistan,” Zaitov told reporters.

In addition, large groups of citizens of Uzbekistan left the Russian Federation on their own or on charter flights of Russian airlines.

Now, according to the embassy,   over a million citizens of Uzbekistan live in Russia, there is no more accurate data.

“In the best times there were about one and a half million citizens of Uzbekistan in Russia. The best times mean the period before the pandemic,” Zaitov said.

Earlier, the Agency for External Labor Migration reported that since the beginning of 2021, more than 22 thousand Uzbeks have gone to work in Russia as part of an organizational recruitment.

In total, over the past six months, almost 29 thousand citizens have gone abroad to work. According to some reports, about 1.6 million people are now working outside Uzbekistan – about 20% of the economically active population of the country. Of these, about 1.1 million work in Russia.
