Crime rate in Uzbekistan: MIA reports nearly 200 offenses per 100,000 people for 2024

In 2024, Uzbekistan reported a total of 132,298 crimes, primarily driven by theft and fraud. Notably, 59.4% of these offenses were committed by young people, and 36.1% by repeat offenders. These statistics were shared on February 26 during a meeting of the Senate Committee on Defense and Security.

During the meeting, officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) outlined the country's ongoing crime prevention initiatives, reporting that authorities successfully solved 92.4% of all cases in 2024. This included the arrest of 8,736 wanted individuals and the recovery of 567 missing persons.

The MIA also highlighted a 23.4% improvement in crime detection, with law enforcement officers identifying 27,953 crimes through their own initiatives.

Additionally, 3,293 corruption and economic crimes committed by 3,880 individuals were uncovered, resulting in the recovery of 239.584 billion UZS in damages. Legal measures were taken against 219 individuals involved in human trafficking.

Crime prevention efforts in local communities

Significant efforts were made to curb crime at the neighborhood level. As a result, no crimes were recorded in 30.6% of all neighborhoods, while 14.3% of crime-affected neighborhoods were classified as "red zones".

Furthermore, over 54,000 women who experienced domestic violence and harassment were issued protection orders. A total of 625 women facing family issues and violence were placed in rehabilitation and adaptation centers.

During discussions, officials acknowledged certain shortcomings in crime prevention and emphasized unresolved issues and underutilized opportunities.

In 2024, the total number of 132,298 crimes translated to nearly 200 crimes per 100,000 people across the country.

Preventable crimes still constitute a significant portion of overall crime. The majority of such preventable crimes involved theft and fraud, with 59.4% committed by youth and 36.1% by previously convicted individuals.

Additionally, over 7,000 crimes were committed by unemployed individuals, highlighting persistent employment challenges in the country.

Cybercrime and traffic accidents

A total of 58,800 cybercrimes were recorded, with 97.7% involving fraudulent access to citizens' bank card funds.

Another growing concern raised at the meeting was the high number of road traffic accidents.

Although there was a decline in traffic accidents, injuries, and fatalities compared to 2023, authorities noted that effective oversight of passenger safety is still lacking.

In 2024, 9,364 traffic accidents occurred, resulting in 8,901 injuries and 2,203 deaths. The causes of accidents included:

  • 47.1% – drivers failing to yield to pedestrians
  • 22.8% – speeding violations
  • 3.7% – drivers falling asleep
  • 3.6% – disregarding traffic signals

During special inspections of intercity and international bus routes, 61 cases of drivers operating buses under the influence were detected.

Following discussions, the Committee adopted a resolution outlining specific recommendations and proposals for addressing the issues raised.
