Surkhandarya governor’s decree to award officials canceled

On the occasion of Homeland Defenders Day, January 14, Ulugbek Kosimov, the governor of Surkhandarya, allocated 661 million UZS to reward his deputy governors and the governors of cities and districts. However, following public protests, the award has since been canceled.

A total of 201 million 250 thousand UZS was designated for rewarding seven deputy governors, 28 million 750 thousand UZS for the Deputy governor in charge of family and women’s affairs — who also heads the region’s Family and Women’s Affairs Department — and 431 million 250 thousand UZS for the governors of Termez city and the district governors.

Following the announcement of this decree on January 20, public protests erupted over the allocation of such funds.

On January 25, the Press Service of the governor’s office of Surkhandarya reported that the decree had been canceled in response to public outcry.

"Various posts were shared on social media regarding the decree issued on January 20, 2025, concerning the rewarding of the governor’s deputies and city and district governors of Surkhandarya region (decree number 12-8-0-F/25). After reviewing the situation, the decree was rescinded. The allocated funds will now be redirected to the ‘From Poverty to Prosperity’ program," the statement said.
