The study highlights several key findings, notably that more than 11% of adolescents display signs of harmful social media habits, with girls being disproportionately affected. In addition, one-third of adolescents are engaged in daily digital gaming, and 12% of them are at risk of problematic gaming, with boys more vulnerable to this issue.

The report identifies a clear link between problematic social media use and adverse effects on adolescents' mental health, academic performance, and sleep quality. Lower mental well-being, poorer school outcomes, and increased sleep disturbances are common among those experiencing problematic use of social media.

In response, the WHO stresses the importance of enhancing digital literacy education and calls for immediate, coordinated action from governments, parents, and caregivers to tackle these growing concerns.

While acknowledging the benefits of responsible social media use, such as improved peer support, the report advocates for age-appropriate and culturally sensitive strategies to foster healthier online behaviors among adolescents.

Ultimately, the report underscores the need for a collective approach to equip young people with the skills to navigate the digital world safely, protecting their mental health and well-being in an increasingly digital society.
