In Uzbekistan, alternative thermal energy production from medical waste will begin. The corresponding presidential decree has been published on Lex.uz.
The project will be implemented by the American company Sayar, which has established a subsidiary in Uzbekistan called Sayar Green.
The head of the investing company is Ramin Sayar, an executive director with over 25 years of experience in the technology industry. Sayar serves as an advisor and investor in various startups and is a board member of both private and public companies.
Starting August 1, 2024, all medical waste from medical institutions will be transferred to Sayar Green for thermal energy production.
Medical institutions will purchase this energy at approved rates, and it may also be supplied to other organizations. However, the tariff rates are not specified at the moment.
The Ministry of Health is tasked with leasing land on the premises of state medical institutions for the construction of thermal processing units until 2048.
In the first phase of the project, which will last until 2025, $7 million in direct investments is expected to be attracted. Annually, 6,000 tons of waste are planned to be processed, achieving a device capacity of 20 GWh per year.
The devices will be launched in Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara regions, with the project’s activities expanding to other regions of the republic in the second phase.
The second phase (2026-2030) involves attracting $108 million in direct investments and increasing the annual processing volume to 90,000 tons of waste. The device capacity is planned to be increased to 300 GWh per year.
Failure to comply with medical waste transfer requirements will be considered a violation of sanitary norms and environmental protection regulations.
Sayar Green was registered on May 1, 2024, with a charter capital of 400 million UZS. The founder is the foreign parent company Sayar LLC, and the director is Albert Martirosyan.
