Sherzod Asadov announced the beginning of the process of preparing for the elections and said that Uzbekistan several times hosted the mission of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, that preparations for the elections are being conducted in accordance with the world standards.
“This means that there is little time left before the pre-election process, it will begin at the end of July. We will have to wait until this time, and then we will find out who the candidates are and when they will nominate their candidates. First of all, this is the constitutional right of every candidate and citizen,” the presidential press secretary said.
For information, presidential elections are held by secret ballot on the basis of the general, equal and direct suffrage of citizens of Uzbekistan. A citizen of Uzbekistan who is at least 35 years old, who is fluent in the state language, permanently has been residing in Uzbekistan for at least 10 years before the elections, can be elected to this position. The President of Uzbekistan is elected for a term of five years.
The next presidential elections will be held on the last Sunday of October this year.
Usually, in the presidential elections in Uzbekistan, in addition to the main candidate, the leaders of other parties also nominate their own candidates. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev became the candidate of the Liberal Democratic Party in the December 2016 elections.
In early June, the leader of the “Milliy Tiklanish” party, Alisher Kadirov, announced that he plans to announce his candidacy for the presidency in June.
In addition, Bakhrom Abdukhalimov, chairman of the “Adolat” SDP, Ulugbek Inoyatov, chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, and Narzullo Oblomurodov, chairman of the Ecological Party, are also expected to become candidates in the autumn elections.
