Uzbekistan and Japan called for accelerated reform of the UN Security Council. This is stated in a joint statement signed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Prime Minister Shinzō Abe.
 
The document notes that the parties reaffirmed the importance of reforming the UN Security Council with a view to transforming it into a more effective body, which “should ensure high representation and reflect the real situation in the international community of the XXI century”.

“The parties, emphasizing the need for an early start of text-based negotiations, also expressed their determination to continue constructive work on intergovernmental negotiations on the speedy implementation of UN Security Council reform, including expanding the membership of both permanent and non-permanent members,” the statement reads.

The Uzbek side also expressed support for Japan’s joining the permanent members of the UN Security Council, while the Japanese side expressed appreciation for the continued support of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Today, the President of Uzbekistan completed his official visit to Japan. The head of state held meetings in Tokyo with Emperor of Japan Naruhito, Prime Minister Shinzō Abe, leaders of the parliament and the government, as well as leading Japanese business circles.

A joint statement, intergovernmental and interdepartmental documents, as well as investment agreements and trade contracts were signed to further deepen and expand the strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and Japan.
