On September 1, Poland hosted a commemorative event to mark the 80th anniversary of the beginning of World War II.

The ceremony was attended by Polish President Andrzej Duda and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, US Vice President Mike Pence, and representatives from more than 40 countries, including Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Georgia, Iceland, Latvia, Malta, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Montenegro, Czech Republic, Croatia and Estonia. French President Emmanuel Macron and UK’s new Prime Minister Boris Johnson did not come to Poland.

Nearly 6 million Polish people died during World War II. Even though 80 years have already passed since the beginning of the Second World War, Poland still keeps on demanding compensation for the damage caused by Germany.
