“This water will be used to support farmers in the southern regions during the irrigation season. Water diplomacy and international cooperation are among the key priorities of our ministry. The distribution and management of transboundary water resources, knowledge exchange, and joint implementation of advanced technologies play a crucial role in ensuring water security across Central Asia,” the minister stated at a climate forum in Samarkand.
Nurzhigitov also emphasized the importance of adapting to climate change, introducing new approaches to water resource management, and strengthening regional cooperation to jointly tackle water scarcity.
It is worth noting that during the 12th meeting of the Joint Working Group on enhancing bilateral water cooperation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov and Uzbekistan’s Minister of Water Management, Shavkat Khamraev, agreed that more than 16 billion cubic meters of water would be supplied from Uzbekistan to Kazakhstan from October 2024 to October 2025.
Additionally, about 1.8 billion cubic meters of water were sent to the Northern Aral Sea — 120 million cubic meters more than previously forecasted. Kazakhstan also received 490 million cubic meters of water through the interstate Dostyk Canal.
