Uzbekistan’s gas and electricity output declines as production struggles continue

In January–February 2025, Uzbekistan experienced a 4.2% drop in gas production, a 12% decrease in oil output, and significant declines in gasoline (-21%) and diesel fuel (-39%) production. Electricity generation also declined.

The Statistics Committee published its industrial production report for the first two months of 2025.

According to the data, natural gas production during this period totaled 7.37 billion cubic meters, which is 329 million cubic meters (4.2%) lower than the same period in 2024 and 781 million cubic meters lower than in 2023.

Reference data on gas production:

  • 2022: Gas production fell from 53.8 billion to 51.67 billion cubic meters (-4%)
  • 2023: Dropped further to 46.71 billion cubic meters (-9.6%)
  • 2024: Declined again to 44.59 billion cubic meters (-4.5%)

Natural gas production trends (2018–2024):

  • 2018 – 61.59 billion cubic meters
  • 2019 – 60.71 billion cubic meters
  • 2020 – 49.77 billion cubic meters
  • 2021 – 53.8 billion cubic meters
  • 2022 – 51.67 billion cubic meters
  • 2023 – 46.71 billion cubic meters
  • 2024 – 44.59 billion cubic meters

During the reporting period, oil production decreased from 118,000 tons to 105,000 tons (-12%), while gas condensate output declined from 214,700 tons to 192,600 tons.

Similarly, diesel fuel production dropped from 123,000 tons to 74,000 tons (-39%), and gasoline output fell from 241,000 tons to 189,000 tons (-21%). However, coal production increased from 659,000 tons to 733,000 tons (+11%).

Electricity production also declined, with 14.06 billion kWh generated in January–February 2025, compared to 14.56 billion kWh in the same period of 2024. The overall decline was mainly due to a 17% drop in power generation by large enterprises.

At the same time, Uzbekistan's automotive sector saw a slight increase in production, with 55,552 vehicles manufactured during the reporting period—193 more than in 2024.
