Around 100 people suspected of violating federal immigration laws in Puerto Rico have been detained, according to CNN, citing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Investigation Bureau.
The detentions were carried out as part of a large-scale operation that began nationwide on January 26, in line with president Trump's executive order.
Among those detained were citizens from countries such as Guatemala, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico, China, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, the British Virgin Islands, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Israel, Italy, and Japan.
It has been noted that all those detained will go through a legal process for deportation.
Puerto Rico is located in the Caribbean Sea, part of the Greater Antilles island group, and consists of Puerto Rico Island along with smaller surrounding islands. It is a U.S. territory, but not a state of the United States. While the influence of the U.S. Constitution is limited in the territory, the highest authority rests with the U.S. Congress. However, Puerto Rico operates under its own system of self-government.
