Uzbekistan and Malaysia announce launch of innovative development period for joint partnership

According to the press service of the President of Uzbekistan, the key areas for the new model of economic cooperation have been identified, including petrochemicals, chemicals, electronics, semiconductor industries, innovative technologies, smart agriculture, green energy, pilgrimage tourism, and more.

During the talks, which began in a closed format and later expanded, the two sides discussed broadening cooperation in various sectors.

To coordinate the development of collaboration and implement high-level agreements, the creation of a Strategic Dialogue platform for Foreign Ministers was announced.

Both countries agreed to continue mutual support within the framework of the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and other international organizations.

To boost trade turnover, an agreement was reached to develop a Preferential Trade Agreement, hold mutual industrial exhibitions, and launch an Industrial Cooperation Program.

A special economic zone will be set up in Tashkent region under the management of a leading Malaysian company to support cooperative projects.

The Malaysian government expressed strong support for Uzbekistan's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The two leaders also stressed the importance of continuing active cultural and humanitarian exchanges. This year, Uzbekistan and Malaysia will hold mutual Cultural Weeks.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Anwar Ibrahim also discussed current regional cooperation issues, particularly the importance of joining forces in the fight against terrorism, radicalism, and Islamophobia.

As part of the official visit of the President of Uzbekistan to Malaysia, a series of events took place, including meetings of analytical centers, presentations on Uzbekistan's tourism potential and cultural heritage, a forum for rectors of leading universities, and more.

In May of the previous year, Malaysia's Prime Minister visited Uzbekistan for an official trip. During the visit, the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission was held, a Business Council was established, and several major business forums were organized.

In 2024, trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Malaysia reached $102.4 million, with exports amounting to nearly $6 million and imports totaling $96.4 million. According to the Ministry of Investments, Industry, and Trade, Uzbekistan is increasing its exports of services, chemical products, and foodstuffs to Malaysia. The Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) has an office at the Malaysian Embassy in Tashkent, and there are currently 37 enterprises with Malaysian capital operating in Uzbekistan.
