On January 16, 2025, four more citizens of Uzbekistan died in Türkiye due to the consumption of counterfeit alcohol, according to a statement from the Consulate General in Istanbul.
Previously, six deaths were reported on January 14, followed by four more on January 15. As of January 17, the total number of deaths of Uzbeks due to alcohol poisoning has reached 14.
According to current data, as of January 17, 88 individuals across Türkiye have been diagnosed with alcohol poisoning from counterfeit beverages, with 37 fatalities, including locals and people of other nationalities.
The Istanbul Municipality reported that on January 16, local law enforcement authorities confiscated 32,862 liters of illegal methanol and ethanol-based alcoholic beverages during raids in several districts, including Sultangazi, Fatih, Bakırköy, Küçükçekmece, Çatalca, Esenyurt, Zeytinburnu, and Beykoz.
The operations led to the arrest of nine suspects. During inspections, authorities discovered 227 bottles of counterfeit alcohol and distillation equipment. Of the nine suspects, three were released after questioning, while six remain under investigation.
Diplomats from the Consulate General visited intensive care units in Istanbul hospitals to check on citizens receiving treatment for alcohol poisoning. Three individuals are reported to be in critical condition.
