Government revives incentives for walking 10,000 steps daily
Uzbekistan is reviving an initiative to promote walking as part of a national movement to integrate eco-friendly principles into daily life. The proposal, outlined in the draft of the 2025 State Program, includes granting “Eco-Active Citizen” status to individuals achieving consistent high performance in walking at least 10,000 steps daily.

Holders of this status would enjoy a 10% discount on public services and preferential rates for consumer loans at banks where the government holds a majority stake. Additionally, 14 families whose adult members all achieve the “Eco-Active Citizen” status could win electric vehicles through an annual lottery.
The initiative is part of the broader “One Million Green Families” national movement, which aims to foster environmentally conscious communities. The program envisions various measures, including:
- Encouraging citizens to walk at least 10,000 steps daily;
- Awarding the “Eco-Active Citizen” title and associated benefits;
- Recognizing families as “Green Families” if all adult members meet the criteria, making them eligible for the electric vehicle lottery;
- Organizing contests like “Cleanest Neighborhood” and “Greenest Neighborhood” in areas where at least half of the families attain “Green Family” status, with winning neighborhoods receiving 500 million UZS for infrastructure improvements.
To support these efforts, an electronic platform is expected to launch by June 1, 2025.
This is not Uzbekistan's first attempt to reward walking. In March 2021, the government introduced the 1hls.uz platform, compensating individuals 3,000 UZS per day for walking over 10,000 steps. However, the program was discontinued in January 2022, reportedly due to unresolved payment issues.
