One of the key highlights was a proposal from Chinese investors to invest $2.7 billion in developing copper and silver deposits in the Bobotog area. The project is expected to create 2,000 jobs and facilitate the annual export of $600 million worth of finished products.
The meeting outlined ambitious targets for Surkhandarya in 2024, including attracting $2 billion in investments, creating 425,000 jobs, and boosting exports to $320 million. The Ayritom International Trade Zone, which currently generates $5 million in monthly product sales, is set to expand its area by 150 hectares, unlocking an additional $250 million worth of project opportunities.
In addition to copper and silver, Surkhandarya is rich in natural resources, including tungsten, coal, salt, and quartz sand. Plans are underway to attract $320 million in investments for mining operations in the Vandob and Chorbog areas, creating 1,500 jobs.
A branch of the Termez Free Economic Zone is also planned on a 50-hectare site in the Bandikhon district to support industrial and commercial growth.
The region’s agricultural potential remains untapped. For instance:
• Boysun and Uzun districts: 18,000 hectares of pastureland could be allocated for cultivating camelthorn, creating jobs for 4,000 people.
• Livestock complexes: Pastures in Uzun, Shurchi, and Kumkurgon offer opportunities to establish sheep and cattle farms.
• Rice farming in Muzrabot: Water from 17 collectors can irrigate 4,000 hectares for rice cultivation, producing 8,500 tons annually and creating jobs for 4,900 people, including seasonal positions.
Surkhandarya also aims to expand its greenhouse operations in the Qiziriq district (300 hectares) and vineyards in the Altinsay district (1,000 hectares), focusing on high-value crops for domestic and export markets.
Tourism is another priority. Improved infrastructure in areas such as Sangardak, Omonkhona, and Boysun could attract at least 1 million visitors annually.
During the meeting, President Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of leveraging local resources to produce finished products, support entrepreneurship, and improve trade and services. He also highlighted the need to allocate agricultural land effectively to ensure food security and create jobs.
