According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreement was signed by the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, on December 22, 2022, during Tokayev's state visit to Tashkent, and it entered into force on July 4, 2023. This document is the culmination of extensive collaborative efforts aimed at legally formalizing the Uzbek-Kazakh state border.

In a meeting on September 25, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, the foreign ministers of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan emphasized that the registration of the border demarcation agreement with the UN Secretariat represents a precedent for Central Asian countries regarding such documents.

The historical significance of the agreement was highlighted, reaffirming the commitment of both nations to the principles of good neighborliness, eternal friendship, and the spirit of allied relations.
