Federal investigators began scrutinizing Adams in November 2023 as part of a probe into whether his 2021 campaign received illegal donations from Turkish citizens and government officials. The mayor has since handed over his phones as part of the investigation.

According to Eyewitness News, the inquiry has expanded beyond Turkey to include Adams' connections with Israel, Qatar, China, South Korea, and Uzbekistan. Investigators are trying to determine whether Adams' campaign colluded with the Turkish government to secure unlawful foreign donations ahead of the 2021 elections. Additionally, there are allegations that the mayor pressured the fire department to approve the construction of a new high-rise Turkish consulate despite safety concerns.

Prosecutors are now seeking more information regarding Adams’ potential ties to the five other nations — Israel, China, Qatar, South Korea, and Uzbekistan.

Mayor Adams, who denies any wrongdoing, addressed the allegations during a public meeting in the Bronx, emphasizing that his administration is fully focused on serving the city. “This team is one of the most diverse administrations in the history of New York City, and they continue to lead us forward in fulfilling our mission,” Adams stated.

In a related development, Dr. Ashwin Vasan, New York City's Health Commissioner, has announced his resignation, effective by the end of the year. While Vasan cited personal reasons for his departure, he clarified that it was not related to the ongoing federal investigation into Adams' administration.
