IVECO planted 10,000 seedlings to address the desertification of the Aral Sea in Uzbekistan

In March 2024, IVECO launched a project to help address the spread of toxic salts and sand due to the desertification of the seabed in the Aral Sea area: planted 10,000 Saxaul tree seedlings, a species native to western Uzbekistan that can grow in the region’s harsh conditions and high-salinity soil, all this with support of Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Research Institute of the Environment and Nature Protection Technologies. The plants cover an area of 10 hectares, equivalent to almost 15 football pitches. With this initiative, IVECO joins nationwide efforts to increase the green land in the country.

Over the last 50 years, the Aral Sea has shrunk dramatically, losing 85-90% of its volume, and the wetland ecosystems of the Amudarya and Syrdarya river deltas have disappeared. The receding waters have left extensive areas exposed and covered with salt and toxic chemicals. Due to frequent droughts and dust storms, some 75 million tons of toxic salts and sand are spread from the seabed every year. This situation has a significant impact on the health of the local population, who experience much higher rates of cancer and tuberculosis and makes access to safe drinking water difficult.

“The Aral Sea disaster is irreversible, but the situation is not hopeless, and we hope that the seedlings we are planting on the seabed will contribute to improving local conditions and the health of the people living in the area. As part of Iveco Group, we are committed to supporting local communities, and through this project, we aim to contribute to making a positive change to address the desertification of the Aral Sea,” stated Koray KURSUNOGLU, Head of IVECO Asia Region
