President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced that presidential elections will be held in Uzbekistan ahead of schedule. According to the presidential press secretary Sherzod Asadov, the head of state signed the decree using the authority granted to the president of the country in Article 128 of the new version of the Constitution.

“Today, the President announced that he signed two important decrees. The first decree envisages specific tasks for the implementation of the updated Constitution, wide dissemination of its content among our people to ensure its implementation.

It is necessary to turn every clause and article of our General Law into a rule of life for our society, especially for our youth, and expand their understanding and imagination in this regard; to create educational programs, textbooks and manuals for the purpose of deep learning in every mahalla, educational institution, organization and enterprise.

Using the authority granted to the president of the country in Article 128 of the updated Constitution, the head of state signed the second important decree. According to it, presidential elections will be held in the country ahead of schedule,” the report reads.

The President explained his decision.

“Of course, it is natural to ask what objective necessity there is for such a decision. Why am I giving up the remaining three and a half years of my presidential term on my own initiative?

Because, as you can see, according to our Basic Law, first of all, all branches of power are being reformed, and the relationship and balance between them is seriously changing.

Secondly, our updated Constitution sets new political, social and economic tasks for the President, parliament, government, ministers, and governors that cannot be delayed.

Thirdly, our people expect important and urgent changes and reforms from us in all areas.

Fourthly, in the current situation where sharp and complex processes are prevailing in the world and in our region, finding the right and effective way of development and its implementation is becoming the most acute and urgent issue.

Dear and respected compatriots, you all see that today we are setting even greater goals. From now on, we will cooperate only with you, our wise and tolerant people, on every issue related to the life of the state and society, current and future development.

It is not for nothing that it is written in our Basic Law that the people are the only source of state power. From this point of view, in the renewed system of state power, our people, I say once again, it is expedient to give a mandate only to the leader whom our people trust. I think that in today’s conditions, this will be the most correct and fair decision,” the President said.

It was noted that the elections will be held in full compliance with the law, in an open and transparent manner. Confidence was expressed that political parties and presidential candidates will come forward with new ideas and initiatives that will serve the peace and prosperity of our country and the well-being of our people.

It should be recalled that today, May 8, the constitutional law “On amendments and additions to certain legal acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan” has come into force.

According to it, if the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan calls the presidential election ahead of schedule, the election will be held within two months in full compliance with the Election Code. In this case, the Central Election Commission will determine the terms of preparation for the election and the implementation of measures for its holding.

Accordingly, the election may be scheduled for the first Sunday (July 2) or the second Sunday (July 9) of July.
