Eastfruit: Prices for vegetables rise in Uzbekistan due to abnormal cold weather

Abnormal cold weather has been observed in Uzbekistan since January 10.

Earlier, it was reported that greenhouses and gardeners of Uzbekistan are alarmed by the penetration of abnormal cold.

According to Eastfruit, over the past few days, vegetable prices in Uzbekistan have already reacted to abnormally low temperatures.

At the same time, not only greenhouse vegetables, but also other types of vegetables have risen in price, and to a greater extent than greenhouse ones. Compared with the price levels at the end of last week, the average wholesale prices for greenhouse vegetables increased from 9% to 17% over the week, while potatoes, onions and carrots increased from 12% to 21%.

According to EastFruit price monitoring, from January 6 to January 13 of this year, the average wholesale price for greenhouse and other types of vegetables increased:

  • green sweet pepper of greenhouse - from 32,000 to 35,000 soum/kg, by 9.4%
  • red sweet pepper of greenhouse - from 30,000 to 35,000 soum/kg, by 16.7%
  • red round tomato of greenhouse - from 15,000 to 17,000 soum/kg, by 13.3%
  • cherry tomato of greenhouse - 43,000 to 50,000 soum/kg, by 16.3%
  • potatoes - from 4,000 to 4,500 soum/kg, by 12.5%
  • onion - 5,000 to 6,000 soum/kg, by 20.0%
  • carrots - from 3,300 to 4,000 soum/kg, by 21.2%.

Wholesale prices for pink tomato and cucumber of greenhouse have not changed over the period under review.

It is noted that the current prices for greenhouse cucumbers are at a record high level. For example, as of January 13, 2023, the average wholesale price for a smooth short greenhouse cucumber is 35,000 soum/kg, which is almost twice as high as on the same date in 2020-2022.
