During a meeting with members of the constitutional commission on the formation of proposals for amending the Constitution of Uzbekistan on Monday, Shavkat Mirziyoyev proposed to ban the death penalty as capital punishment.
“Historical experience shows that the dignity of a person is primarily expressed in his right to life. It is one of our greatest and most sacred values. We have abolished this type of punishment, gradually preventing the crimes for which execution is imposed. Nevertheless, some citizens propose to restore the death penalty and reintroduce it into the criminal law,” the president said.
He added that in most countries of the world that have raised democratic and humanistic ideas to the highest level, the death penalty has been abolished.
“The right to life is the natural right of every person, and this right was given to them by God, and not by the state,” said Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The president said that in this way Uzbekistan would demonstrate to the world its commitment to the ideas of humanism.
