“Blackout was caused by a short circuit at a thermal power plant in Uzbekistan” – KEGOC
Kazakhstan Electricity Grid Operating Company (KEGOC) said the blackout was caused by an incident in Uzbekistan. According to the Kazakh side, the cause of the accident was a short circuit, which resulted in the shutdown of six power units at the Syrdarya thermal power plant.

“On January 25, 2022, at 11:59 am Nur-Sultan time, six power units were shut down at the Syrdarya TPP due to a short circuit. Electricity shortages in the Uzbek power system have led to power outages in the Kazakh power system, which continues to operate in parallel with the Uzbek and Kyrgyz power systems. As a result, the 500 kV electrical transit “North-East-South of Kazakhstan” was overloaded,” the company said.
It is noted that the energy systems of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan were completely out of order, and all power plants and consumers were cut off. The power outage in Uzbekistan was about 9,600 MW (100% of consumption), while in Kyrgyzstan it was 2,600 MW (100% of consumption).
“As part of the reconstruction, Kazakhstan’s single energy system has supported the energy systems of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan by supplying power to these countries, which has allowed them to begin reconstruction work. It took about a day for Kyrgyzstan’s energy system to return to normal,” the statement said.
It is reported that the incident was not related to the activities of consumers engaged in digital mining.
