Uzbekistan’s radioactive waste volume estimated at 4 million tons
The volume of radioactive waste in Uzbekistan amounts to 4 million tons. This was announced at an AIMC press conference with the participation of officials from the State Committee for Industrial Safety.

It is noted that these radioactive wastes were accumulated during the Soviet era as a result of uranium mining activities. This problem exists in other Central Asian countries as well. For example, Kazakhstan’s radioactive waste volume is estimated at 240 million tons.
To rehabilitate the areas where these wastes are located, €2 million grant funds will be allocated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Union and a number of other benefactor countries. A relevant decision on the allocation of funds had already been adopted.
Reportedly, inspections by the Department of Radiation and Nuclear Safety revealed 1,920 deficiencies in the work of facilities. During the investigation, 41 employees were prosecuted for violating radiation and nuclear safety.
In order to develop nuclear medicine and the fight against cancer in 2019-2021, 3 radiotherapy devices were delivered to Uzbekistan.
