Foreign Ministers of Central Asia discuss the situation in Afghanistan
On July 7, the foreign ministers of Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan held negotiations in the videoconference format at the initiative of the UN Center for Preventive Diplomacy.
According to the press service of the Foreign Ministry, the meeting noted the importance of consolidating regional efforts to peacefully resolve the Afghan crisis, restore the country’s economy, and observe the principle of the leadership role of the Afghan people in the development of the political process in the country.
“The ministers focused on the importance of jointly countering the threats of international terrorism, developing effective steps in this direction by Central Asian countries. The parties expressed their support for the further development and expansion of political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian ties between Afghanistan and Central Asia, including through the wide involvement of Afghanistan in regional integration processes,” the statement said.
The participants noted the importance of implementing various infrastructure projects in the energy, transport, and communication spheres on the territory of Afghanistan, with the assistance of the countries of the region.
Another topic for discussion was the upcoming “Central and South Asia: Regional Interconnectedness. Challenges and Opportunities” International Conference, which will be held in Tashkent this month.
The meeting also discussed priorities for assistance to Afghanistan, including humanitarian assistance during the pandemic.
