Boriy Alikhonov elected head of a new Senate committee
The issue of further improving the activities of the Senate of Oliy Majlis on developing the Aral Sea region was considered at the eighth plenary session.

“It is known that the consequences of the ecological catastrophe associated with the drying up of the Aral Sea have already become a problem not only in Uzbekistan or the Central Asian region, but in the whole world. The approach to the Aral Sea issue has changed radically in terms of achieving tangible results. In addition, the head of our state twice drew the attention of the world community to this issue from the UN rostrum.
The President put forward a number of initiatives on the development of the Aral Sea region. The ministries and departments have been assigned specific tasks for the development of the region.
In other words, it is necessary to study the implementation of the tasks (programs) on socio-economic development of the Aral Sea region, to hold hearings of the reports of relevant ministries and departments on the matter,” the Senate press service said.
In order to strengthen parliamentary participation and control over the development of the Aral Sea region, senators decided to establish a relevant committee in the Senate and approve its Charter.
Senator Boriy Alikhonov has been nominated for the post of the committee chairman.
In addition, it was proposed to transfer Senator Botir Matmuratov, current Chairman of the Committee on Judicial-Legal issues and Anti-Corruption, to the post of Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Development of the Aral Sea Region.
Both of the nominees were approved to the posts in the new committee.
