UK ready to assist in developing civil society institutions in Uzbekistan

On February 12, 2020, in London, a delegation of Uzbekistan’s National Center for Human Rights, headed by the director of the center, academician Akmal Saidov, met with members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Uzbekistan, the Equality and Human Rights Commission, representatives of the ministries of justice and foreign affairs of Great Britain, as well as the leadership of the NGO Global Governance Partners.

According to the Embassy of Uzbekistan, during the meetings, the British side was informed in detail about the measures being implemented in our country to ensure and protect human rights, implement international standards and relevant UN recommendations. Particular attention was paid to the main provisions of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s address to Oliy Majlis, which outlines the priority tasks for the further strengthening of human rights and freedoms in the country.

British partners praised the initiatives of the head of Uzbekistan to abolish the institution of residence permit, providing citizenship to people living in the republic for over 15 years, as well as the care and attention shown to citizens, who work in foreign countries.

Welcoming the development of the draft National Strategy for human rights, the British side expressed its readiness to assist in its practical implementation, as well as development of civil society institutions in the country as a whole.

British partners were invited to the upcoming Samarkand Human Rights Forum.
