UNFPA ready to assist Uzbekistan in preparing a Gender Strategy

Chairperson of the Senate of Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbayeva met with a delegation of UNFPA mission in the Republic of Uzbekistan, led by its head Yu Yu. 

The head of the UNFPA office in Uzbekistan sincerely congratulated Tanzila Narbayeva on being elected as Chairperson of the upper house of parliament and wished success in her future activities.

During the meeting, topical issues of the implementation of state policy on the formation of a healthy family, gender equality and the elimination of violence against women were discussed.

Yu Yu noted the successes of Uzbekistan in reducing maternal and child mortality, improving family welfare. The country’s achievements in increasing the socio-political activity of women, their role in managing state affairs, ensuring gender equality, implementing youth policy and the Sustainable Development Goals were also highlighted.

The UNFPA representative gave a positive assessment of the upcoming census organization in Uzbekistan in 2022, as well as the introduction of gender statistics in the country. The adoption of new laws “On guarantees of equal rights and opportunities for women and men” and “On the protection of women from oppression and violence”, specific actions to provide women in need with housing, work, and the allocation of targeted loans to ensure employment, deserve special attention, Yu Yu emphasized. UNFPA expressed readiness to assist the Government of Uzbekistan in these issues.

At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including the implementation of joint projects to prepare a Gender Strategy, further protect maternal and child health, conduct a population census, and form a youth parliament.
