Shavkat Mirziyoyev: To receive additional financial support from international organizations, we should combat corruption

In his speech at the first joint meeting of the chambers of Oliy Majlis on January 21, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev raised the issue of cooperation with international financial institutions.
According to the head of state, in order to receive additional financial support from such organizations as the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), it is necessary to effectively combat corruption in the country.
“They are afraid of one thing – will corruption continue, will there be justice, will there be a guarantee for investments. That’s what they are afraid of,” Kun.uz correspondent quoted Shavkat Mirziyoyev as saying.
The President also recalled that cooperation with the EBRD was suspended for several years.
“Our partnership with EBRD was deferred for almost 20 years. During this hiatus, our neighbors received billions of dollars. Due to new contracts and programs, we mastered more than $500 million in 2019. Only a person, who knows the economy, can understand this,” Mirziyoyev said.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted that having a large number of economists is one of the main achievements of the new Oliy Majlis.
“There are many economists both in the lower and upper houses. As you know, the biggest shortcoming of the previous parliament was that there were few economists in it. There are enough modern economists among you now.
In 5 years, bringing GDP to $100 billion is a very big goal. In 1991, our economy was much better than our neighbors,” the head of state said.
For information, out of 97 senators 20 are economists in the Senate now. In the lower house, representatives of the financial, economic and banking sectors, as well as entrepreneurs are 30 people.
