OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media ready to help ensure freedom of press in Uzbekistan

During the meeting, prospects for further strengthening bilateral cooperation were discussed.

The parties praised the close and effective cooperation established between the organization and relevant state bodies of Uzbekistan, in particular, the Agency for Information and Mass Communications (AIMC) under the Presidential Administration, as well as measures taken by the Government to ensure freedom of speech and press in the country.

In this context, the international round table devoted to the issues of ensuring freedom of the media organized by AIMC in Samarkand on October 11 was especially noted. The event was attended by 20 ambassadors - Permanent Representatives of the participating States to the OSCE.

The sides also exchanged views on topical issues relating to the protection and promotion of the principles of freedom of speech and expression, assistance from the organization in the study of foreign best practices in lawmaking in the field of media.

Following the meeting, an agreement was reached on holding a number of joint and regional events to strengthen effective dialogue and role of the media in Uzbekistan in 2020.
