Since the beginning of June, the EastFruit portal has expanded the geography of price monitoring - now wholesale prices for all main types of fruits and vegetables are collected by specialists in eight countries of the region. If earlier Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Moldova and Tajikistan were on the list, now Uzbekistan and Belarus are also added to it.
“Uzbekistan is one of the most dynamically developing suppliers of vegetables and fruits to foreign markets and is already among the top five countries in terms of exports of apricots, sweet cherries and other types of products. We have closely followed this market in recent years and are now pleased to offer system monitoring of wholesale prices for this country,” says Andrei Yarmak, economist at the investment department of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and head of the regional fruit and vegetable development project, who supports EastFruit.
EastFruit analysts have already begun to include Uzbekistan in the weekly reviews of the fruit and vegetable markets, which provides a complete picture of the market.
“Our reviews are already stimulating trade between countries, because market participants, seeing that, for example, onions in Uzbekistan are much cheaper than in Ukraine or Poland, react instantly and start purchasing products in these countries. And increasing competition in the market always benefits all participants: both farmers and consumers,” Katerina Zvereva, head of EastFruit, said.
