The President signed the law on ratification of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
The convention, adopted on 22 May 2001 in Stockholm, entered into force in 2004 and is ratified by 182 States Parties.
Although the United States, Italy and Israel have signed the convention, they have not yet ratified it.
Parties to the convention have agreed to a process by which persistent toxic compounds can be reviewed and added to the convention, if they meet certain criteria for persistence and transboundary threat. The first set of new chemicals to be added to the Convention were agreed at a conference in Geneva on 8 May 2009.
Ratification of the convention will contribute to the improvement of the ecological situation in Uzbekistan. It will also enable our country to expand its export volume and geography through the introduction of the EU privilege system.
