At a plenary meeting of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis on March 5, deputies discussed the draft law “On the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes”.
The draft law provides for the creation of a legal framework for a system to ensure the use of atomic energy, the unification of all existing norms and regulations on atomic energy, bringing them in line with international obligations signed by the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The draft law defines the powers of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Ministry of Energy, as an authorized state bodies for working out a unified state policy and strategic directions in the development and use of AE, and the Agency for the Development of Atomic Energy under the Ministry (Agency Uzatom) is entrusted with power and control.
As noted by members of parliament, the adoption of this bill will serve for peaceful use of atomic energy and creation of legal conditions for the development of nuclear energy. At the same time, it will contribute to the formation of a system for protecting the environment, the life and health of citizens from the negative effects of ionizing radiation, and introducing the responsibility of officials in the use of AE.
