Prisoners may be granted the right to vote depending on the crime they committed

The draft State Program “Year of Active Investments and Social Development” envisages improving the provision of citizens’ electoral rights. In particular, a plan of action will be developed.
The following are envisaged in the plan:
- studying international and foreign experience of granting the right to vote for persons held in places of detention;
- providing the right to vote on the basis of the offense committed by persons deprived of their liberty, including the adoption of specific proposals for amendments and additions to the law;
- carrying out extensive propaganda and explanatory work on this issue.
By February 1, 2019, the Central Election Commission, the Chambers of Oliy Majlis (on the basis of agreement), the Ministry of Justice, the Institute of Problems of Legislation and Parliamentary Studies and the Interior Ministry will develop a draft document.
