UNGA plenary meeting adopts revised resolution on prevention of radiation threat in Central Asia initiated by Kyrgyzstan

On Dec. 20, the revised resolution on the role of international community in prevention of the radiation threat in Central Asia initiated by Kyrgyzstan was unanimously adopted at the 62nd plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York, Akipress reported citing the Foreign Ministry of Kyrgyzstan.

The draft resolution was earlier considered and adopted by the second committee of the UNGA. It was co-sponsored by 40 UN member states - Australia, Austria, Armenia, Belarus, Canada, Qatar, Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, India, Indonesia, Spain, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Luxembourg, Mongolia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Benin, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Estonia, France, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Turkey and USA.

During consideration of the resolution, Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic Mirgul Moldoisaeva stressed that the resolution initiated by the Kyrgyz Republic will contribute to improving environmental safety and achievement of sustainable development goals both in Central Asia and around the world.

Kyrgyzstan’s Permanent Representative to the UN expressed gratitude to the member states for supporting the resolution initiated by Kyrgyzstan and noted that the unanimous adoption of this resolution and the co-sponsorship of 40 UN member states demonstrates the commitment of the international community to continued cooperation and coordination to reduce the threat from the former uranium mining facilities and first of all uranium tailings in Central Asia.
