US citizen to head ADB office in Uzbekistan

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed Cindy Malvicini a new head of the representative office in Uzbekistan, the Bank’s press service said.

Malvicini will lead ADB activities in Uzbekistan and oversee the development and implementation of ADB’s business plan for the country for 2019-2021 and partnership strategies.

ADB’s business plan and strategy aim to support the country’s long-term development through infrastructure investments, human capital development and the private sector, as well as improved regional and social integration.

“ADB has a long-term partnership with Uzbekistan. My duty will be to strengthen this cooperation and work closely with the government of Uzbekistan to effectively coordinate our assistance in carrying out reforms and development of the country,” the new head of ADB’s office noted.

Cindy Malvicini is a citizen of the United States of America. She began her career in ADB in 2005 and worked in various senior positions. Prior to her current appointment, she was Deputy and Acting Head of the ADB Office in Uzbekistan.

From 2007 to 2014, Malvicini worked as a water resource specialist in the South Asian Department of ADB, then until 2017 she was the head of the project management unit. She began her career at ADB as head of the disclosure unit in the Department of External Relations.

The previous head of the representative office, Takeo Konishi, worked in Uzbekistan from 2014 to June 2018.

Since 1995, the ADB has provided Uzbekistan with $ 7.1 billion in loans and $ 85.9 million in technical assistance. In 2018, the bank allocated 4 loans totaling $ 993 million to improve the efficiency of electricity generation, improve primary health care services, support farmers in the fruit-growing sector and boost current reforms through improved economic management in the country.
