The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has frozen plans to host boxing tournament in 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

This decision is related to the dissatisfaction with the investigation conducted against the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) and its current leadership.

The IOC disagreed with the election of Gafur Rakhimov to the presidency of AIBA, who was subjected to the US Treasury Department’s sanctions.

At the same time, there is an investigation going on against Mr. Rakhimov’s financial and anti-doping activities.

Under the framework of IOC’s decision, funding AIBA, selling tickets, as well as approving the system of qualification and selection have been suspended. In addition, the IOC pledged to protect interests of athletes and make every effort for the implementation of competition.

Besides, a special committee has been established at the IOC to study thoroughly the Association’s report and make a list of recommendations for potential sanctions.

The final decision on whether or not to conduct a boxing competition at the 2020 Olympics will be made by the IOC’s next session in 2019 in Lausanne.
