Uzbekistan leads as the top source of labor migrants in Russia, followed by Tajikistan

In an interview with Kommersant, Colonel General Alexander Gorovoy, First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, discussed the number of migrants in the country. According to the ministry, more than 6.1 million foreigners are currently in Russia, with most of them coming from Central Asia and CIS countries. Based on data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the publication revealed statistics on labor migrants who entered, stayed, and left Russia between January and August 2024. The statistics show that Uzbekistan leads in all categories.

In the first eight months of this year, more than 1.88 million citizens of Uzbekistan traveled to Russia. At present, over 1.792 million of them are working in the RF.

Tajikistan follows, with over 1.2 million Tajik labor migrants currently in Russia.

Although the movement of citizens between Kazakhstan and Russia exceeds one million, the number of Kazakh nationals currently in Russia is relatively smaller—609,000. Kyrgyzstan, another Central Asian country, has over 262,000 of its citizens in Russia.

Nearly half a million Chinese nationals are in Russia, ranking fourth in the list. Additionally, hundreds of thousands of citizens from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Türkiye, and Turkmenistan are also present in the Russian Federation.

According to the official overseeing Russia's migration policy, there are nearly 739,000 illegal migrants in the country, with the majority coming from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.
