Uzbek and Russian officials are negotiating a major agreement on the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan.

UzAtom made the statement in response to remarks by Russia’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Vladimir Tyurdenev.

Earlier, the Ambassador said that the agreement on the nuclear power plant is “almost ready” and only the technical aspects of the issue remain.

“Currently, working groups set up by the parties are holding regular talks to discuss the terms of the main agreement on the construction of an NPP in Uzbekistan.

Positions of the parties were developed and presented in the discussion of this agreement, taking into account the national interests of Uzbekistan.

The parties are negotiating to increase the security, reliability and economic efficiency of the project, as well as to bring their positions closer to the national interests of the Republic.

In addition, in order to obtain a permit for the NPP site, a large-scale engineering study is being carried out on the priority area and a document has been developed to assess the environmental impact of the construction and operation of the NPP, which will be examined and publicized. Work is underway in accordance with the plan.

The results of engineering research work carried out in cooperation with the Russian side on the selected area will serve as a basis for the terms of the contract for the construction of the nuclear power plant,” UzAtom said.
