On June 30, 2020, Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov met with U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad and Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) Adam Boehler.

The parties noted with satisfaction the establishment of close political contacts, the strengthening of trade-economic, cultural, humanitarian and military-technical ties.

It was noted that the Uzbek side attaches particular importance to the speedy establishment of peace in Afghanistan – the stability of all Central Asia depends on security in this country.

The interlocutors expressed support for reaching an agreement between the political leaders of Afghanistan and emphasized that the creation of an inclusive government and the Supreme Council of National Reconciliation should help unite all the political forces of the country in the name of a bright future for Afghanistan.

At the meeting, special attention was paid to expanding the interaction of the two countries in the Afghan direction. In this context, it was noted that the first meeting of the trilateral format of cooperation “Uzbekistan-USA-Afghanistan” held on May 27 confirmed the importance of this mechanism for developing practical proposals for the restoration of the IRA and its active involvement in regional economic processes.

The American side highly appreciated the efforts of the leadership of Uzbekistan to promote a regional approach in the peaceful settlement of the situation in Afghanistan and reiterated its readiness to continue active cooperation in this direction.

During the talks, an exchange of views also took place on attracting DFC funds to finance a number of projects that contribute to the expansion of economic, transport-communication ties between Afghanistan and the countries of the region.

Adam Boehler expressed DFC’s readiness to participate in the implementation of projects in the field of energy, infrastructure, medicine and education in Uzbekistan.

Other issues of mutual interest were also discussed at the meeting.
