The Georgian embassy in Uzbekistan has organized a ceremonial event in Tashkent to pay tribute to the Georgian statesman and poet Shota Rustaveli occasioned to the 850th birthday anniversary of his. Participants of the meeting laid wreath to the Rustaveli monument in the Uzbek capital.
Addressing the representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Uzbekistan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia Konstantin Zhgenti stressed the great poet’s role and importance in the development of Georgian literature and in the glorification of high human values in his works.
“Today, following 850 years, a monument to the poet is full of flowers – a sign that his works have not lost their relevance. Shota Rustaveli’s masterpieces are the heritage of all mankind. They sing love, friendship and peace, people’s attitudes to each other, as well as eternal values inherent in the human race. He is revered in many countries. In particular, the assignment of the name of the great poet to one of the main streets of Tashkent and the erection of a magnificent monument here is proof of the high respect for the personality of the bard, and is indicative of the level of relations between our two nations. We are sincerely glad that we celebrate this memorable event.”
For reference: Information about Shota Rustaveli’s life experience is quite limited and is barely confirmed by historical documents. According to some sources, he was born approximately in 1972, while others point to 1160-1166. His surname, Rustaveli, is associated with his homeland – the village of Rustavi. Shota Rustaveli was not only a remarkable poet, but also a wonderful artist and restorer. He renewed and painted the monastery of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. Yet in the world culture the name of Rustaveli is associated primarily with his poetry. It was this very literary field that he found his life. His creativity was very much helped by the knowledge of Arabic and Persian literature, rhetoric and poetry fundamentals, theology, familiarity with the Platonic philosophy and Homeric writings. Rustaveli’s lyric poetry is distinct with aphoristic and metaphorical qualities. One of the authentic masterpieces of not only the national, but also the world literature is the poem “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin”, the anthem to patriotism, service to the fatherland, friendship and love.
